How it all started
I was born in Wolverhampton, United Kingdom
on the 14th September 1985.
I moved to Exmouth, Devon when I was 8.
When I was 18, I went to University and studied
Film Studies and Media & Cultural Studies
It was when I was studying that I first came up with the idea for Wendell and Wanda. I wanted to create a book that was entertaining and educational.
I'm big into words. So, I did my research and discovered that Wendell and Wanda are both names that have a deeper meaning related to exploring. That's why I chose the names for the characters. That and obviously there is a nice bit of alliteration at play; which is a classic bit of word play to make a piece of writing entertaining. Especially a children's book.
I think it's important to write about what you are interested in. So, my first Wendell and Wanda story was called 'The Big Bouncy Sun Drop'. It was about basketball. I'm not sure I even have a copy of it anywhere now. I'll have to keep looking for it.
Anyway, I sent a copy of The Big Bouncy Sun Drop to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in America; to see if they could support the idea. They liked it, but that's about all that came from it.
At the time, I didn't know what I know now about getting a book published and out into the world.
So, I parked the project idea and finished my studies.
Then after finishing my degree, I eventually settled back in Exmouth, and in 2009 I founded Exmouth Basketball Club.
I met my girlfriend.
I had a bunch of different jobs whilst I was trying to do all the things that I wanted to do.
Then we moved to Exeter, Devon in 2014.
And in 2018 we had our son.
Fast forward to 2020 and, after recently writing some other books on self-Help and sports coaching, I've rekindled Wendell and Wanda.
Somehow the idea came to me that the pages in the book should be blank. A lot of children's books already have all the pictures in them. Which is great, I love that. You've got to have some books that are made that way.
But as a basketball coach my focus is on getting people to express themselves. Art is one of the very best ways anyone can express themself. You have to help people work with the canvas. Their canvas.
So, in the Wendell and Wanda book series I provide the template, and the reader, whatever age they are provides the artwork.
And that people is called TEAMWORK!
I really hope you enjoy reading the Wendell and Wanda book series and creating the artwork to go with it. I look forward to seeing what you create.
